Carpet Care

The best way to retain the look of your new carpet or rug is through regular vacuuming, at least twice a week. This prevents grit and dirt at the base of the pile accumulating and becoming abrasive which can lead to increased wear and tear.

To protect the appearance of your carpets, it is advisable to place barrier mats by each entrance. This will scrape dirt, grit and moisture from the shoes. Cleaning the mats regularly will ensure their continued efficiency.

Rubber soled shoes and all types of heels can be hard on carpet pile, especially in front of chairs where heel abrasion is difficult to avoid. Periodically move chairs and restrict the use of sports shoes and trainers in certain areas.

All carpet gets dirty and after a while will need a clean to bring back its appearance and colour. It is recommended that carpets be cleaned by a specialist cleaning company that use the correct solvents and cleaning agents for your carpet.

Everyday spills and stains can be cleaned using a Spot Cleaning Kit as an aid to preserving your carpets good looks.

If you clean the carpet yourself, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Always pre-test a small unobtrusive area before cleaning the rest of the carpet. If a stain reappears after cleaning, all the spill and/or cleaning agent may not have been removed completely. Further cleaning and rinsing is necessary.

If in doubt consult a carpet cleaning specialist.

Carpet and Rug - Spills and Stains.

The basic rule for dealing with spills and stains is to act fast, Gently dab the excess spill with a paper towel or a clean white cloth, never rub as this can spread the stain and damage the pile. Once the stain is contained, work from the outside edge to the centre of the stain using the appropriate carpet cleaner. Avoid soaking the affected area as this can cause the stain to spread.

  • Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet roll or a clean cloth
  • Scoop up or scrape off any solids
  • Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment  if unsure, use solvent first
  • Always work from the edge of the spot inwards

BLOT – DO NOT RUB THE STAIN.

  • Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backed carpet tiles
  • When using solvents always ensure there is plenty of fresh air ventilation
  • Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotters with clean water
  • Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer

Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; work into the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge

Always read the label of any cleaning products as some harsh cleaners will remove the colour from your carpet leaving much worse marks. It is always a good idea to try the carpet cleaner on a inconspicuous part of your room prior to using on the stain.

Once the carpet is clean, blot up any excess liquid with paper towels and allow to dry, if you find that some of the stain is still visible repeat the process until it is removed.

If the stain proves difficult to remove you should consider calling a professional carpet cleaning company, most companies will call out to do a spot clean for a small charge.
